Bijbehara: Clashes erupted during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Arwini village of Bijbehara, here in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on Thursday.
As the clashes spilled over to adjacent areas, train services on the Banihal-Srinagar route were briefly halted.
According to reports, government forces cordoned off a locality in Arwini at about 1pm. Police said that they had “inputs regarding presence of militants in the area.”
Soon after the cordon was laid, many youths took to streets and pelted the government forces with stones. The forces retaliated with tear smoke shells. The clashes, as per local sources, continued till the government forces withdrew from the area and the CASO was called off.
The clashes spilled over to Hassanpora area nearby, where the Banihal-Srinagar track passes. Trains passing through this area were halted for about half an hour.
A senior police official from Bibehara maintained, however, that there were no clashes in the area. “There was a CASO following which some young boys moved towards the railway track. The train was halted by railway police for a brief while as a precautionary measure till the boys were dispersed,” the official said.
