Ganderbal: Apprehending that the government may move out the Central University campus out of Gandebal, civil society and political leaders in the district are up in arms.
The construction work in the CUK campus at Tulmulla was suspended on GoI’s (MHRD) directions, because of swampy land in the area, Education Minister Altaf Bukhari told the legislative assembly recently, but assured that the campus would stay in Gandebal.
However, the assurance has not been able to put apprehensions to bay in Ganderbal.
Activists led by political social and activist advocate Altaf Lone Monday protested outside J&K assembly against any move to shift the campus.
The protesters were holding placards reading, ‘relocation of Central University from Ganderbal is unacceptable’, ‘Don’t vitiate atmosphere of Ganderbal’, ‘Don’t put careers of hundreds of students on stake’.
“There is a larger conspiracy to shift Central University from Ganderbal but, we won’t let it happen. Crores of rupees have been spent construction of the University so far, now after eight years they saying that the land provided for construction of the University is not good enough. This is just an excuse to shift the university,” Lone said.
Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Society president, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani said if the campus was shifted from the district people would be forced to launch an agitation.
Mir urged authorities to review the decision and not force people to come to streets as the people would feel cheated by the government.
Awami Insaf Party (AIP), Ganderbal Chief Patron Shiekh G A Saloora termed the uncertainty around the relocation grave and sensitive and appealed the government to handle it with care.
He blamed the National Conference MLA Ganderbal Sheikh Ishfaq Jabar of “failing” to appraise the government about the sensitivity of the issue, and save the decision of his own party.
Former PDP district president Farooq Ganderbali also expressed reservation against any plan to shift central university from Ganderbal.
“Any such step will be a big blunder on part of the government,” Ganderbali said adding that people of the district have sacrificed life and given property for the construction of the University.
He said political affiliations should be kept aside and joint fight should be put up for the cause.
“Land given for the University was given positive nod by various technical inspections but still conspiracy is been hatched to shift central University,” he said.
He also accused the current vice chancellor of the university of aiding corruption and making it a hub of illegal appointments.
