ANANTNAG: Clashes erupted in Vessu area of Qazigund on Tuesday afternoon following rumours that a local militant was killed during the gunfight in Karan Nagar, Srinagar.
No one was injured seriously during the clashes. Some youth sustained minor injuries and were given local first aid.
The name of a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant, Shakoor Ahmad of Sopat village in Vessu, had been circulated on social media with reports that he had been killed during the gunfight in Srinagar.
Local sources said that the rumours held some sort of credibility after forces were deployed in Sopat village, only to be withdrawn later.
“Some youth came on the National Highway and pelted stones at government forces deployed along the road,” local sources said, adding that the forces used tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesting youth.
The clashes made local shopkeepers shut shop, enforcing a shutdown in the area.
The police however denied that any clashes took place in the area.
SDPO Qazigund Aftab Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that there were no clashes in the area.
“Everything is perfectly fine here. There were some four-five boys on the street and nothing more. They create rumours to disrupt the peace,” Aftab said.
