- BUDGAM: A Hurriyat activist, Mohammad Yousuf Rather, was shot dead after an unknown gunman fired at him in Chahrangam, Beerwah, on Monday when he was travelling in a passenger vehicle, police said.
Mohammad Yousuf Rather, known as Yousuf Nadeem, was on his way to his home in Sandipora, Budgam, when the unknown assailant shot at him and killed him.
Yousuf, according to police sources, was acting as general secretary of the Tehreek-E-Wahdate-Islami, a constituent of Hurriyat Conference-led by Syed Ali Geelani.
A police source said that the slain was the militant chief of the Hizb-ul-Momineen between 1990-1995.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Budgam, Tijinder Singh told Kashmir Reader that Yousuf was returning home from his office in a Tavera vehicle from Beerwah.
“The Tavera vehicle, bearing registration number JK04C-8016, was travelling towards Budgam. The vehicle was fully loaded with passengers. He was sitting in the middle seat of the vehicle when a gunman sitting in the same vehicle opened fire on him,” he said.
“Yousuf was hit in the head and back and died on the spot,” he said.
A local resident of Sandipora said that Yousuf is survived by five children. He said that before joining militant ranks, Yousuf was an employee in the Power Development Department (PDD).
After serving jail term, he was released and later reinstated. He was presently posted at Beerwah.
Yousuf, according to neighbours, was a religious man and the sole bread earner of his family.
Police officials said that an FIR has been registered at Police Station Beerwah and an investigation has been started.
