Srinagar: The family of nine-month-old Maryam, whose picture went viral on the internet when her mother Mysara Bano, 25, was killed during an encounter on December 11, 2017, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to bring to justice the security personnel who killed Mysara Bano.
The family’s appeal was drafted through human rights activist Ahsan Untoo who stated in the appeal that Mysara Bano was killed in cold blood.
“Why a Kashmiri toddler didn’t get attention after her mother was killed? The incident was unfortunate and at the same time nothing has been done to stop these kinds of incidents,” the application states.
“The lap of her mother has been snatched from her and since the killing took place, neither any investigation nor any security personnel has been booked. The matter has been overlooked by investigation agencies,” said Ahsan Untoo.
Untoo further said, “The killings of innocent people must end now. We cannot afford to have more Maryams.”
Mysara Banoo was killed during a gunfight between Lashkar-e-Toiba militants and government forces at Unisoo village of Handwara. Bano was the lone daughter of 60-year-old Mohammad Shaban Mir and was married to local boy Ishfaq Ahmad Wani less than two years ago. The couple took care of the ailing Mir and lived a blissful married life but it all fell apart after Bano was killed by bullets fired by government forces.
