Sopore: The drive by officials of Muncipal Committee(MC) Sopore to remove encroachments from roads and footpaths on Wednesday was resisted by street vendors who protested against the move.
The street vendors alleged that MC employees damaged their carts, kiosks where they were earning their livelihood.
“In case government wants to remove encroachments for smooth movement of traffic in the town, then they should allott an alternative site for us where we can earn our livelihood,” they said.
Umar, a street vendor told Kashmir Reader that their livelihood will be ruined and they don’t have any alternate source to feed their families.
The protest led to the halt of traffic for an hour in the town and resumed after police officials reached the spot and assured protestors that issue will be taken up with higher authorities.
Executive Officer of Municipal Council Sopore, Mateen Ahmed told Kashmir Reader that they had already warned vendors to stop occupying roads and footpaths. “They didn’t, so we started a drive against the encroachment by these vendors.”
Despite repeated attempts, additional district commissioner was not available for comments.
