Srinagar: Authorities on Tuesday evening placed Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest, sources said.
Mirwaiz tweeted in Urdu calling his house detention as “crackdown against the Hurriyat leadership.”
Pertinently, Mirwaiz was placed under house detention soon after the Joint Resistance Leaders (JRL), Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, in a joint statement issued protest programme for the death anniversaries of late pro-freedom leaders, Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru.
Both Bhat of Trehgam Kupwara and Guru of Boabgah Sopore, were hanged and buried in Tihar jail on Feb 11, 1984 and Feb 9, 2013 respectively.
