Say water scarcity for years leading to immense hardships
Sopore: Residents of Dangerpora village in the outskirts of Sopore staged a protest inside the Public Health Engineering (PHE) office in Sopore on Satudary accusing the department of failing to provide adequate water supply.
The protestors stayed in the premised for hours demanding immediate restoration of water supply to their village.
The protestors told Kashmir Reader that they are facing immense hardships due to the acute shortage of water supply from last few years which is making their life difficult
The scarcity of water, they said, is also leading to diseases among children as villagers fetch water from dirty streams, “which even after boiling remains dirty”.
Farooq Ahmed, one of the protestors, said that the women have to walk miles for a single bucket of water “which is too difficult to get sometimes”.
“It seems to us as if we don’t exist on Sopore map even after being very close to main Sopore town” he said.
“Despite repeated assurances and promises at PHE department of Sopore, they have again and again failed us to provide a drinking water supply to us for years,” another protestor said.
Senior officials from the department assured protestors that matter would be resolved within a short period of time, and said that a new pipeline would be provided to the area soon.
The protesters dispersed peacefully later, but warned of mass protests in case the problem was not resolved.
A PHE official told Kashmir Reader that they had tried to build a new pipeline in the village but due to “personal rivalries” in the village work got stopped.
“I request the locals of the village to cooperate with us and we will assure them the water supply,” he said.
