Srinagar: After some anonymous persons announced from the Jamia Masjid, Shopian to continue the shutdown, southern district Shopian is observing a complete shutdown on the tenth consecutive day Saturday against the civilian killings.
Local sources said that an announcement was made through the loud speaker of Jamia Masjid last evening that there will be no shutdown on Saturday however, soon after the announcement some unknown persons repeatedly refuted the announcement and declared to continue with the shutdown.
Shopian observed shutdown on Jan 25, 26 and 27 against the killings of two militants and a 17 year old civilian boy, Shakir Mir at Chaigund Adoo. Later the shutdown was extended to protest against the killings of three youths, Javed Ahmad, Suhail Lone and Rayees Ahmad at the hands of army soldiers at Gonawpora on Jan 27 and a ten year boy who lost his life in an explosion at the Chaigund encounter site.
Two local militants, Firdous Ahmad and Sameer Ahmad were killed in a gunfight with forces in Chaigund village of Shopian on January 24.
Witnesses said that all shops, business establishments, government and private offices are closed in the district while transport is off the roads.
