Jammu: Members of the Gujjar community Tuesday demanded that a CBI probe be ordered into the rape and murder of eight-year-old girl in Kathua.
A large number of protesters gathered at the Exhibition Ground and took out a rally towards the civil secretariat, demanding a CBI probe into the killing of the girl, whose body was found in a forest on January 17, a week after she went missing.
The protesters, who carried placards and shouted slogans, were stopped by police near the bus stand.
The protest came a day after the family of murdered Kathua minor met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
The protesters demanded justice against gruesome act and capital punishment for the culprits involved in the rape and murder.
Local news agency CNS reported that a large number of people carried out a protest rally and staged a sit-in near Jewel Chowk Jammu.
The protesters said that the state government has failed to protect the citizens: no mother, sister and daughter are safe in the state. “Even the CM of the state is herself a female and could have done a lot to safeguard the women but she utterly failed to do so. When it was Nirbaya rape and murder case whole India was outraged but the same is not seen in Aasifa’s case because these branded civil society have become racist just like government,” they said.
The protesters said that government’s intention to shield culprits became clear when they arrested social activist Talib Hussain for raising voice against this gruesome rape and murder.
Civil and police officials visited the spot and pacified the protestors.
