Sopore: The body of a goldsmith who was abducted and murdered allegedly for robbing him off was fished out Tuesday from Jhelum 34 days after he went missing.
Police said the body was spotted by local residents near Bypass bridge Sopore after it surfaced on its own in the river.
Hailing from Kalaroos area of Kupwara district, Tariq Ahmed ran a jewellery shop in Sopore and went missing on December 26.
Police investigations said that Tariq had been abducted and murdered by four men after robbing him off.
Police have already arrested four men – Mohammad Sajad Lara, Mohammad Adil Lara, Ghulam Mohammed Lara and Nayeem Ahmad Lara – for the crime.
The accused according to police confessed that after abducting Tariq, they strangulated him, stole the gold and threw his body in the river.
The family of Tariq had held several protests in Kupwara and Sopore over the delay in retrieving his body.
“We have informed the family members and the body will be handed over to them after proper medical formalities,” a police official said Tuesday.
Traders Federation Sopore called for a shutdown on Wednesday against the murder.
His funeral prayer (Nimaz jinazah) will be held at on Wednesday afternoon at Iqbal Market Sopore.
