Jammu: MLA Shopian Adv. Mohammad Yousuf Bhat Monday accused the government of step motherly treatment towards the district hospital Shopian and staged a walkout from assembly during the discussion on grants of health department.
MLA Shopian said that SDH was setup there when Shopian was a tehsil of Anantnag district.

About 95% population of the district is rural, 15% is tribal. Govt claims that it has been upgraded to the level of District Hospital, but is devoid of basic healthcare facilities and specialists, he said, Irony is hospital doesn‘t even have facilities of a sub-district level.

Bhat added that the deteriorated health facilities at CHC Shopian compels the patients of far flung areas to approach costly private sector for treatment.

“The hospital is facing acute shortage of specialised doctors, qualified para medical staff, ultra-modern diagnostic facilities. The SDH still operates from the old, run-down building and no new infrastructure has been added to it during the past decade. Work on the new building, which has been under construction since 2009, is going on at snail’s pace,” he said.

“It takes more than one and half hour for patients to reach Srinagar. We have immediate need of critical care ambulances for shifting critical patients to Srinagar hospitals. I have been persistently demanding for the up-gradation of CHC Shopian to the level of District Hospital and the issue was discussed in district board meeting also but till date no progress has been made in this regard,” he said

Unfortunately, we don’t have district hospital facilities and as such Shopian hospital is considered as the worst hospital in valley in terms of basic health care facilities, MLA added.
