SRINAGAR: Police on Sunday foiled Awami Itihad Party’s (AIP) march against killing of two youth in Shopian by army, party spokesperson said.
In a statement, the spokesperson said the march started from UN Office, Srinagar and was to be concluded near CM’s residence at Gupkar.
“Breaking strict restrictions, scores of protesters led by AIP Supremo and MLA Langate Er Rasheed started the march chanting slogans against the killings, seeking revocation of AFSPA, urging UN to wake up and asking Mehbooba Mufti to discharge her duties of protecting life and property of innocent Kashmiris,” he said. “However while the march was proceeding towards Mufti’s residence, large contingent of police used force to disperse the rally and arrested dozens along with Er Rasheed and lodged them in police station Ram Munshi Bagh Srinagar.”
“Those arrested included party senior leaders Zeeshan Pandith, Parvez Jamal and Prince Parvez,” the spokesperson said. “Later in the afternoon, Er Rasheed was shifted to his residence and placed under house arrest.”
Talking to media before being detained, Er Rasheed said, “Mehbooba Mufti has lost the moral authority to rule the state and has surrendered everything before New Delhi. Not only as chief minister but as the head of the unified command, it is her legal duty to deliver justice and arrest the killers without staging dramas of so-called magisterial inquiries.”
The MLA Langate said the Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat “seems to have taken the direct control of dealing with everything related to suppressing peaceful voice of masses”. “It is a tragedy that Mehbooba Mufti, (Defence Minister) Nirmala Sitaraman and (Home Minister) Rajnath Singh have been passing the buck to each other and trying to confuse masses about what is happening on the ground,” he said.
“Kashmiris reject all magisterial probes and the killings strengthen the will of Kashmiris to fight for their fundamental right,” Rasheed said and appealed the world community to “wake up and stop India from carrying genocide of Kashmiris”.
“United Nations and the world community must ask New Delhi not to cover the shameless killings of unarmed protesters by giving false excuses and claiming to be defending itself from alleged insurgence,” the independent MLA said.
