Srinagar: A complete shutdown is being observed in north Kashmir’s Kupwara on Saturday to commemorate the victims of 1994 massacre.
All shops and other business establishments are closed in the town, local sources said.
Groups of people in the morning reached the local martyrs graveyard and offered special prayers for all the deceased.
At least 27 people were killed in Kupwara on Jan 27, 1994 after government forces opened fire in the local market.
Locals said that the town had observed shutdown on Jan 26 despite warning from troops not to observe shutdown on Indian Republic Day.
“In retaliation government forces gunned down 27 innocent people in Kupwara market by firing indiscriminately on Jan 27,” the locals said.
