Shopian shuts to mourn civilian, militant killings

Srinagar: A complete shutdown is being observed in south Kashmir’s Shopian areas Thursday to mourn the killings of a civilian and two militants at the hands of government forces last evening.
A 17-year-old civilian Shakir Ahmad Mir, resident of Qalampora was killed after hit by a bullet during clashes with forces near the gunfight site at Chaigund village.
The slain militants who were killed in the gunfight were identified as Sameer Ahmad of Chaigund-Adoo village and Firdous Ahmad resident of Ganowpora Shopian. Both the killed militants were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen.
Meanwhile, local sources told Kashmir Reader over phone that forces have established checkpoints at several places around Ganowpora and Chaigund villages to stop people from reaching the area to participate in the funeral prayers of the deceased.
