MLA Shopian stages walk out from assembly

SRINAGAR: MLA Shopian Advocate Mohammad Yousuf Bhat on Wednesday staged a walkout from the assembly during discussion on grants of the health department.
MLA while taking part in the discussion on grants for health department accused the government of “step motherly” treatment towards the sub-district hospital (SDH) Shopian.
He said the SDH was built when Shopian was a tehsil of Anantnag district. It later became tehsil of Pulwama district from which it was carved out a separate district 10 years ago.
“About 95 percent population of the district is rural and 15% of it tribal. This community health centre (CHC) though claimed to have been upgraded to the level of district hospital is still devoid of basic facilities of healthcare and services of specialists. What pains more is that hospital doesn‘t even have facilities of a sub-district level,” he said.
MLA said the “deteriorated” health facilities at CHC Shopian compel the patients of far flung areas to approach costly private sector for treatment. He said the hospital is facing acute shortage of specialised doctors, qualified paramedical staff, ultra modern diagnostic facilities and healthy environment for patients.
“The SDH still operates from the old, run-down building and no new infrastructure has been added to it during the past decade. Work on a new building, which has been under construction since 2009, is going on at snail’s pace,” he said. “It takes more than one and half hours to reach Srinagar and we have immediate need of critical care ambulances to shift critical patients to Srinagar hospitals.”
MLA Shopian added, “I have been persistently demanding for the up-gradation of CHC Shopian to the level of district hospital and the issue was discussed in district board meeting but till date no progress has been made in this regard.”
“Unfortunately, we don’t have district hospital facilities and as such Shopian hospital is considered as the worst hospital in valley in terms of basic health care facilities.”
