Srinagar: The government on Tuesday appointed Dr A G Ahangar as Secretary (Coordination) in the Health and Medical Education Department less than a month after he was removed as Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura.

As per the government order issued today by the Commissioner/Secretary GAD, Khurshid Ahmed,

Dr. A.G. Ahangar has been appointed as Secretary (Coordination) in the Health & Medical Education Department to oversee all the coordination issues relating to implementation of PMDP projects including the upcoming AIIMS at Vijaypur and Awantipora and five Medical Colleges in the State.


The appointment order has been issued in reference to the SKIMS Governing meeting held on January 12, which had also asked the government to order inquiry in the allegations against him after three faculty members of the Institution were found indulging in private practice.

“The Health & Medical Education Department shall provide the required logistic support for smooth discharge of duties,” it reads.

“A post from the overall cadre strength of common pool posts from the Heads of Departments is transferred from the General Administration Department to the Health & Medical Education Department for the purpose of drawl of salary of the officer,” the order said.

The GAD said that Dr Ahangar shall also be entitled for transport to be provided by the J&K State Motor Garages, Accommodation to be provided by the Estates Department and Staff including Private Secretary, Stenographer, Junior Assistant and Orderly (01 each) to be provided by the General Administration Department.

The government had removed Dr Ahangar from Director’s post and suspended three senior doctors after the trio was found indulging in private practice against institution’s norms.

The government had ordered the attachment of SKIMS Director Dr AG Ahanger with the General Administration Department while the three faculty members, the Dean and Head of Department of General Surgery, Dr Altaf Kirmani; Head of Neurology Department Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Wani and Head of Neonatology Department Dr Wajid Ali were asked to report to the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir.
