Srinagar: The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) committee for the amendment in the party constitution has sent the draft proposal of the amendments to the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for the final approval.
“We have recommended some constitutional amendments to the party’s constitution,” PDP’ spokesperson, Rafi Mir, who is also the member of the committee, told Kashmir Reader.
“We have sent the proposal to the chief minister, who is the president of the party, for the approval. After her nod, the recommendations will go to the general council of the party for the approval and its subsequent implementation,” he said.
Mir added that committee has recommended amendments which will make the structure of the party inclusive.
Earlier, the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had constituted a six-member committee headed by senior party leader and MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig for making amendment in party constitution in a bid to strengthen the party at grassroots level.
The committee comprised of Rafi Ahmad Mir, Nizammudin Bhat, Syed Basharat A Bukhari, Ved Prakash Mahajan and Syed Asgar Ali.
Another PDP leader said the main focus of the committee is to amend the constitution in a manner which will consolidate the party on ground level.
“Unlike National Conference, the PDP had no clear hierarchy to do party activities at the grass root,” the leader said. “We do not have the party positions. Like we have no Halqa presidents or provincial heads who will highlight the work of the party on the ground”.
The PDP leader said it was due to the fact that PDP was formed some 18 years ago when the 2002 elections were held.
“That time the focus was not kept on that hierarchy. The constitution of the party also did not touch those minute but important issues,” the PDP leader said. “Now as the elections are in the offing after two years and the time has passed, a dire need is being felt to amend the constitution, make the hierarchy clear, and assign constitutional posts to the workers and the activists which will keep them tied to the party.”
“Besides, it will help us in accommodating more people in the newly created posts for the party. It will also be a great move as it will help in creating a dedicated cadre which will be highlighting and transmitting the government achievements to the common man”.
