Swedish skier killed in Gulmarg avalanche

Baramulla: A Swedish skier was killed and another injured when they came under an avalanche in ski resort Gulmarg on Thursday.
Official sources said that Daniel Akessan, 25, was skiing in the second phase of Gondola on Affarwat peaks and mountaineering area Thursday afternoon along with another Swede Benjamin Asberg, 24, when an avalanche struck the area.
Rescue team from the police and tourism swung into action and recovered the two skiers. Akessan was found in critical condition and succumbed later in a nearby hospital, while Asberg a resident of Ostersund in Sweden is said to be stable and recuperating.
SSP Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain said one tourist has unfortunately died while another has been rescued and shifted to hospital where he is stable.
Divisional officials on Wednesday had issued an avalanche warning for vulnerable areas in seven districts of Kashmir.
Earlier this month, 11 people including a BRO officer was killed and several others injured when they came under an avalanche near Sadhna Top in Kupwara district.
