NC, Congress walk out over Bakerwal girl’s murder

Jammu: The abduction and murder of a minor girl in Kathua, whose body was recovered from a forest in the district on Wednesday resonated in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, with opposition members raising the issue and staging a walk out.
Asifa Bano, an 8-year-old girl, a resident of Kathua had been missing since Jan 12, and his body was found on Wednesday in a forest area. There are apprehensions of sexual assault too but the medical report is awaited.
As soon as the legislative assembly resumed its business this morning, opposition members from the National Conference and Congress raised the issue of her abduction and murder.
NC legislators, Mian Altaf, Mubarak Gul, and independent Hakim Yaseen asked the government to issue statement and investigate the matter.
Parliamentary Affairs minister, Abdul Rehman Veeri, told the assembly that an 8-year-old girl named Asifa had been missing January 08, 2018.
“Her father registered a missing report in police station Hira Nagar where he suspected abduction,” Veeri said. “An FIR 10/2018 under 360 RPC was registered and a look-out notice was issued; on Wednesday, the dead body of the minor was found at around 10:30 am in forest area of Kathua which led to protests by Bakerwal community.”
The minister said that speedy investigation has been initiated.
However, NC legislator Mian Altaf questioned the government over its failure in past such investigations. “Give us a time frame as when the report shall be tabled in the house,” he said.
Congress legislator Vikar Rasool yelled, “Kathua mein minorities par zulum ho raha hai yahan (minorities are being persecuted in Kathua).
“Why were police men doing nothing for last one week; people are angry and protests are being held,” he said.
“Is it the Beti Bachao, Bati Padao; Bakerwal community par Zulum kiya ja raha hai,” “One criminal who hails from Hira Nagar is accused but enjoys political patronage,” the Congress MLA alleged.
Congress’ G M Saroori demanded immediate suspension of concerned SHO and DSP.
“What are you doing? We will not tolerate it… when will the report come? Give us report in 24 hours,” he asked.
PDP MLA, Chodhary Qamar Hussain also joined in with the opposition to asked the government to table the report within a day.
Seeking immediate probe into why the police were silent since her abduction, The opposition members from the NC, Congress, along with the PDP legislator Hussain, and an independent MLA staged a walk-out amid “nikami sarkar, naalayak sarkar”.
In a statement posted her on official Facebook page, Chief Minster Mehbooba expressed outrage on the murder and assured speedy investigation.
“Outraged by the heinous incident in which a young Bakerwal girl has lost her life. Incidents like this will be investigated expeditiously & the guilty will be punished.”
Chairperson of State Women’s Commission, Nayeem Ahmad Mehjoor, also took to facebook and posted three photos of slain minor’s family. “Very heart wrenching day… Walking two km kuchha road to Rasana Kathua, it was difficult to console parents of a kid who went missing n (and) found dead after 7 days in a nearby Jungle. Parents say she was molested n (and) raped…waiting for medical report… I feel suffocated…” she wrote on the post.
