MPAMPORE: A major playfield at Kadlabal Pampore has been turned into a cesspool by residents living adjacent to it, by diverting sewage outlets of their homes inside.
Sports enthusiasts alleged the official apathy towards the field has encouraged the residents, who also dump garbage into the ground.
“These unscrupulous residents have turned the ground into a cesspool. It has turned into a marshy land,” they said.
A local resident advocate Tasaduq Farooq alleged that vested interests have always played with the sports careers of the youth in the town and due to lackadaisical approach of the authorities the playfield is facing odds to hold sports activities.
“The earth filling of the playfield was done few years back to improve the condition of the ground but the unscrupulous residents have ruined the ground again by directing their sewerage outlet directly into the field,” Another resident Khursheed Ahmad alleged.
The playfield was taken over by Jammu and Kashmir Sports council in 2010. A foundation stone for stadium was laid by minister for Youth and Welfare and Sports RS Chib in 2012 but the work is yet to complete.
Much to the dismay of sportsmen, municipal authorities have also been acting as mute spectators.
“A chunk of the field has been converted into bus stand and a religious seminary has constructed some lavatories,” alleged Mohammad Ayoub.
“It seemed as if no authority existed as encroachments were taking place under their nose,” he said.
The municipal authorities did not stop the encroachment nor did they take any action.
When contacted Executive Officer, MC Pampore said that he has served notice to the residents who put sewage and garbage into the playfield and has given them seven days to desist or face action.
Meanwhile Divisional Sports Officer Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Nuzhat Ara assured she would visit the ground and take up the issue with higher authorities.
