SW officials in dock, 300 certificates identified
BANDIPORA: The department of social welfare is in trouble after its officials have issued disability certificates to hundreds of people and the practice has been going on unabated for several years. The issue was brought to limelight by the screening committee in Bandipora district on Wednesday.
According to sources in the administration, the complaints over these years were falling on deaf ears as the mafia involved in it is believed to have strong connections with social welfare department of the district.
After the issue was brought into Chief Minister’s notice couple of months ago, the enquiry committee was ordered to unearth the scam.
So far the enquiry committee officials said that they have found 300 fake certificates issued in violation of set procedures.
Source said that a girl came before the committee during the investigations and her disability certificate was found to be fake.
Rehana Shabir daughter of Shabir Ahmad of Inderkoot Sumbal under certificate number CMOB/577 Dated 03/03/2011, was rejected by Medical Board for being bogus.
Talking to media, Rehana Shabir said she had to produce disability certificate in school to appear in exams with a helper and hence she went to Social Welfare Office Sumbal for the same. She said, an employee of the office promised her to get the disability certificate in a hassle-free manner without visiting Bandipora office and demanded Rs 1500 to get the certificate, she alleged. However, she received a certificate with fake reference number and fake stamps.
President Disability Association Bandipora, Nazir Ahmad said that more than 300 certificates have been found fake and this scandal is running since long. He said the certificates are given without consulting a medical board while fake stamps of Board members are used.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Khursheed Ahmad Sanai acknowledged that fake certificates have been issued and said that during investigation they found fake disability certificates issued by some officials. He said further investigation is going on. “Whosoever will be found involved in this will be punished accordingly,” he said.
