Employees welcome Shah as director
SRINAGAR: The resident doctors of SKIMS Saturday suspended their strike after the governing body of the institute ratified the suspension of three doctors and attachment of previous director.
The governing body also ratified the appointment of Prof Omar Javed Shah, Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, as the new director and ex officio Secretary to the government till further orders and also ordered a full-fledged inquiry in terms of relevant rules into the allegations.
President of Resident Doctors Association (RDA), Dr Zubair Ahmad, told Kashmir Reader that the government has accepted their demand of conducting an enquiry regarding the attachment of Dr A G Ahangar.
“We have suspended our strike in the larger interest of patient care since the matter is entirely sub-judice to the court of law,” he said adding, “The strike would remain suspended till we observe court decision.”
In a statement issued today, the RDA said “We expect a time-bound, honest and earnest findings from the enquiry as per law of the land. We hope justice prevails and justice triumphs,” the statement said.
It said the resident doctors agitation was to highlight, “gross violation of norms, lack of proper trial and to uphold the dignity of the highest chair,” of medical fraternity in Jammu and Kashmir. “We believe we said and we stood for what people could not. We have represented the shortcomings via our agitation,” the statement read.
The doctor’s body also termed the court order staying the government’s attachment of director as moral victory.
“Honorable court of law also upheld our sentiments by staying the order of attachment of Director SKIMS which is a moral victory for us,” the statement read.
The body said that their strike forced government to conduct and an emergency Governing Body Meet. “GBM has asked for an enquiry to investigate the matter. Governing Body also appointed an interim Director from the SKIMS Medical Fraternity (Rather than a bureaucrat) which is a very welcome step,” the statement said.
Meanwhile the SKIMS faculty and administration greeted Professor Omar Javed Shah on assuming the charge of director and assured him of full cooperation and support.
Shah chaired an emergency meeting with all faculty heads and stressed on streamlining the functioning of SKIMS.
A statement issued PRO SKIMS said that Shah acknowledged the importance of every individual working in SKIMS to strengthen the basic patient care services. “He said that government is focused and is monitoring closely the working of SKIMS and everyone working in the Institute should be committed to serve at grass root level which includes basic patient care system so that the Institute sets an example in tertiary healthcare,” the PRO said.
Ghulam Mohammed Panndit, President of Non Gazetted Employees SKIMS, also welcomed Shah as the new director of the SKIMS. He said that Shah has a clean record as he has not done any private practice.
“His record is clean and his behavior with patients has also remained good,” he said.
