Srinagar: The SKIMS governing body on Friday issued a statement which may deepen the deadlock between resident doctors and the government over the removal of Dr AG Ahangar as Director of the institute.
The governing body, headed by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, on Friday ratified the government decision to relieve Prof AG Ahangar of his duties and directing him to report to the general administration department (GAD).
However, it has recommended an inquiry against him, alleging “lack of supervision”.
“The governing body authorised the Chairperson of the governing body (the Chief Minister) to order appropriate inquiry into the issues related to lack of supervision and control by Prof AG Ahangar over the recent months,” the statement issued through the Information Department said.
“SKIMS is a premier health institute of the state and no effort to either demean its reputation or compromise the quality of service to patients would be allowed,” the Chief Minister has said, addressing the meeting.
The premier body also gave the go- ahead to the appointment of Prof Omar Javed Shah, Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, as the new Director and ex officio Secretary to the government.
“It has also ratified the action taken against three faculty members for indulging in private practice and directed SKIMS to institute a full-fledged inquiry in terms of the relevant rules,” the statement said.
The meeting also decided to constitute a small management committee to be set up by SKIMS which shall meet periodically to monitor the functioning of the institute and recommend measures as would be required to improve its overall functioning.
The meeting was called following a court order in favour of Dr Ahangar. The governing body meeting’s attendees included Minister for Health and Medical Education, Bali Baghat; Minister for Finance, Dr Haseeb Drabu; Minister of State for Health and Medical Education, Asiea Naqash; Chief Secretary, BB Vyas; Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Rohit Kansal; Principal Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Dr Pawan Kotwal; Prof Omar Javed Shah, Director, SKIMS; Principals of GMC, Srinagar, Jammu and SKIMS Medical College, Srinagar; Prof MS Khuroo, Prof Khursheed Iqbal and Prof Altaf Ramzan (all members of the governing body).
