SHOPIAN: Suspected militants attacked police station Keegam in southern Kashmir’s Shopian on Friday evening. Police sources said that a heavy exchange of fire continued for about seven minutes between the militants and the police. Keegam village is a Tehsil headquarters situated on the Shopian-Srinagar road.
Superintendent of Police, Shopian, SA Dinkar told Kashmir Reader, “Suspicious movement was challenged by policemen at police post by putting torch light. The men (militants) outside fired on the police post, which was retaliated by the policemen.” He added that there was no loss of life or property and the area was cordoned. “Militants took advantage of darkness and escaped,” he said.
Local sources told Kashmir Reader that around 6:50 pm, they heard the sound of three bangs followed by heavy exchange of firing.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, South Kashmir, S P Pani told Kashmir Reader that there was some exchange of fire, the area is under cordon and there is no loss of life or property. “The attack was outside the police station. It was not a personal attack on the police station, it is a proactive action taken. The police have also given chase,” he said.
