Srinagar: After telling the state assembly last year that 76 people were killed in “violent protests” in 2016, the government on Friday told the same assembly that only 51 were killed. Replying to a legislator’s query, the government said that 51 persons were killed in the seven-month uprising that followed the killing of Burhan Wani, between July 8, 2016 and Feb 27, 2017.
Last year, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had said that only four persons died in the 2016 uprising due to “excessive use of force, torture or harassment” by government forces.
The government had also told the State Human Rights Commission that the kin of 76 slain civilians would be granted compensation.
