BUDGAM: A local militant was killed and a house blasted to rubble during a fierce gunfight at Zohama Chadoora in Budgam district on Monday afternoon, police said.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Munir Khan told Kashmir Reader that a local militant, who is yet to be identified, has been killed in an encounter that began in the afternoon at Zohama area of Chadoora.
Police sources said that a joint team of army, police and paramilitary CRPF had launched a cordon-and-search operation at Zohama village, following inputs about the presence of militants there. They said that while the team was carrying out house-to-house searches, militants opened fire and a gunfight ensued.
Local sources in Chadoora told Kashmir Reader that a huge contingent of police, army and CRPF cordoned off the Zohama area at midday. “After a few minutes of searches in the area, the sounds of gunshots were heard,” Shabir, a local, said.
Soon after the news of the gunfight spread in adjoining villages, several youths assembled near the encounter site. They pelting the government forces with stones and tried to breach the cordon. Shabir said that the forces lobbed teargas shells to disperse the stone-throwing youths.
Another eyewitness said that the house where the militant had taken shelter was blasted to rubble by the government forces.
The gunfight continued through the afternoon and finally ended at about 6pm, police said.
Two boys were injured in clashes between government forces and locals at main Chadoora town. They were rushed to sub-district hospital (SDH) Chadoora for treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that two minor boys were admitted to the SDH but they were stable and out of danger.
Internet services were snapped in Budgam during the gunfight and had not been restored by the time last reports came in.
