Claims channel ran ‘baseless’ news against Shabir Shah
SRINAGAR: Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) on Monday said that they have served a legal notice to ETV Urdu TV channel for broadcasting baseless news about its incarcerated chief Shabir Ahmad Shah.
In a statement issued here, the DFP said that the notice states that in consequence of the fake news item on ETV Urdu, the TV channel has committed breach of “fundamental and personal rights” of Shabir Shah.
“The notice has called upon ETV Urdu to take note of and pay an amount of rupees 5 crore to Shabir Shah for inflicting harm upon him,” the DFP said.
“The notice was issued through advocate Fayaz Ahmad Sodagar,” they said.
Shabir Shah, who is presently lodged in Central Jail Tihar, New Delhi, is a prominent pro freedom political leader of Jammu and Kashmir from 1968, fighting for “right to self-determination”.
“The ETV Urdu on December 3, 2018 telecasted a caption in Urdu saying Rs. 62 lakh rupees was recovered from Shabir Shah by Enforcement Directorate,” said the DFP in a statement.
“The news is false and frivolous and has been deliberately aired,” they said, adding even the charge sheet filed by ED New Delhi against Shabir Shah does not reveal anywhere that rupees sixty lac have been recovered or seized from him.
“The notice states that Shabir Shah is a reputed political leader of Jammu and Kashmir, and has earned a good fame and respect among the masses. Besides, he has a good repute, respect and fair name among people of several countries outside India, as he has been named as “prisoner of conscience” by Amnesty International in 1994,” said the DFP.
