SUMBAL: Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested an over-ground worker (OGW) of the Lashkar-e-Toiba and recovered from him a cache of arms in Banyari village of Bandipora district.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Sumbal, Sheikh Tahir, told reporters at Sumbal police station that acting on a tip-off, police along with a Navy team of MARCOS lunched a cordon and search operation in Banyari village in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
In the wee hours of Sunday, a suspicious person was noticed and was challenged to stop, Tahir said. When the suspicious person found himself encircled, he surrendered by raising his hands. Upon searching him, one pistol, one pistol magazine, 4 pistol rounds, one AK 47 magazine, 30 AK rounds, 2 UBGL grenades, and a Chinese hand grenade were recovered from his possession, the police officer said.
He said that preliminary investigation suggests the arrested person is Idress Ahmad Baba, son of Muzaffar Ahmad Baba, resident of Asham. It came to the fore during the investigation that he is working for the banned militant outfit LeT.
A case, FIR number 02/2018, under Section 7/25 Arms Act has been registered at police station Hajin and further investigation is going on, police said.
