Meghnad Desai to deliver lecture, Nitish Kumar to get award
Jammu: India-born UK politician and eminent economist Lord Meghnad Desai will deliver the first Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Memorial Lecture instituted by the government to honour the former chief minister, while an award instituted in his name will be conferred on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Desai will talk on “Devolving Power: The British Experience” at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium on Monday, January 8, at a function commemorating the death anniversary of Sayeed.
Desai’s hour-long lecture will be followed by felicitation of Nitish Kumar with the Mufti Muhammad Sayeed Probity in Public Life Award.
Governor NN Vohra will preside over the event and also present the award to Kumar.
The PDP founder and two-time J&K chief minister, Sayeed, died on January 7, 2016.
“Kumar will be felicitated for his work and the contributions he has made as a politician,” a PDP member said.
Kumar, he said, had closely worked with the late Mufti in the VP Singh Government. Mufti was the union home minister.
An eminent economist and Labour politician, Desai recently wrote a book ‘Politicshock: Trump, Modi, Brexit and the Prospect for Liberal Democracy’.
In 2011, he unsuccessfully stood for the Speaker of the British House of Lords, the first ever non-UK born candidate to contest for the post.
