SHOPIAN: Illegal extraction of soil is going on unabated in Shopian district despite assurances from the additional deputy commissioner that it would be stopped.
In brazen violation of J&K’s land revenue act, section 133-A, the soil extraction is going on unchecked at Wachi, Darbagh and Aglar areas of district Shopian.
Local residents said land mafias were excavating grazing land to fill agricultural and low level plots for plantation or construction.
Residents of Darbagh Aglar village said that their repeated pleas to officials go unheeded as the land mafias were “in league” with them.
Residents said that land extractors start their work in the evening till midnight, using men and heavy machinery to transport and dig the grazing land.
Muhammad Shaban, a local resident said that soil is being lifted from grazing land at different places and used to fill the paddy land (Aabi-Awal) in other areas in violation of various acts while “no revenue official has taken cognizance of the issue despite promises.”
Locals also accused the revenue and geology and mining officials of watching the entire devastation as mute spectators.
Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Aijaz Asad told Kashmir Reader that he will look into this matter on priority.
“Nobody brought this issue in my notice till date not even officials. I will look into this issue,” he said.
