Ganderbal: The Srinagar-Sonamarg road thrown open for traffic on Wednesday after remaining closed since December 12, has been closed again till further orders.
SDM Kangan Gulam Mustafa Indrabi in a statement said that the Metrological department has predicted snowfall and avalanche threats over the next few days.
To avoid any untoward incident, he said, the deputy commissioner Ganderbal has asked for stopping the vehicular movement from Gagangeer onwards with immediate effect.
Sonamarg, which remains abuzz local and non-local tourists in summers, receives heavy snowfall during winters, hindering any tourist activity as well as traffic movement upto mid April.
To make Sonamarg accessible round the year, the government started execution of 6.5 km Gagangeer-Sonamarg Z-Morh tunnel two years back.
The construction of the tunnel is also a part of the process to connect Ladakh region with Kashmir as its first phase. Work on 14.2 km Zojila tunnel is yet be taken up.
Due to the heavy accumulation of snow residents of many localities in Sonamarag like Sarbal, Nilgrar and Shutkady shift their families to areas in Gund-Kangan.
