Srinagar: Women working on contract-based sweepers in Lal Ded Hospital staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding their services not to be terminated.
The protestors who assembled at Srinagar’s Press Enclave in the afternoon said that they had been asked to quit despite their having worked in the hospital for more than a decade.
“We are 44 contract-based sweepers. We have been working in the hospital for the last 14 years doing menial jobs such as sweeping and cleaning the floor. But recently we were told by the hospital administration to quit,” said a protestor.
She said they had been serving the hospital for long but the decision to throw them out has shocked them.
“We brought the issue to the notice of the official concerned, but so far nothing has been done,” she added. According to the protesting sweepers, they were paid Rs 2,300 a month, on which they would run their families. “We appeal to the chief minister to look into the matter,” they said.
