Baramulla: A day after police recovered the body of a 40-year-old woman from an orchard in Jahama Baramulla, police claimed to have solved the case by arresting the assailant.
The mother of six had gone missing from district hospital Baramulla in the intervening night of December 28 and 29.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Baramulla Shafqat Hussain told reporters that the accused, Gulzar Ahmad Malik of Naidkhai Sumbal, had lured the woman to Jahama and raped and killed her by hitting with stone on her head.
CCTV footages from the hospital led police to the accused, who the police said has confessed to his crime.
Police said the woman, a resident of Khaitangan, had been accompanying her ailing mother at the Baramulla hospital.
They said Gulzar had enticed the victim and the two hired a taxi (Maruti Van) upto Jahama railway crossing.
The accused took the victim to nearby orchards where they had tiff over some issue, after which the accused raped and later killed her by hitting her head with a stone, Shafaqat said.
A case FIR No. 228/2017 U/S 302 RPC has been registered in police station Baramulla and the body of the victim handed over to relatives after medico-legal formalities. Shafaqat said the case was solved within six hours by police.
DSP headquarters Ruhail Mircha, SHO Baramulla Khalid Fayaz and duty officer Delina SI Mohammad Ashraf were present in the press conference.
