Srinagar: A day after the government announced holding of Panchayat elections from mid-February, opposition National Conference (NC) and Congress said they are ready to contest the polls.
Confirming this to a local news agency, KNS, NC president and parliamentarian Dr Farooq Abdullah urged people to get ready, saying that the Panchayat polls would pave the way for decentralisation of power at grass roots level.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had told Governor N N Vohra on Monday that polls would be held from Feb 15 next year.
The Congress party also welcomed the announcement but said they were apprehensive about the security situation.
State Congress chief G A Mir told a local news agency, KNS, that any announcement made by the government on strengthening democracy at the grassroots is a welcome measure and that the party is ready to jump into the fray with full confidence and the peoples’ mandate.
