Srinagar: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday once again summoned Syed Naseem Geelani, the son of Hurriyat Conference chief Syed Ali Geelani, to its Delhi headquarters for questioning in an alleged “terror funding” case.
Naseem Geelani told Kashmir Reader that a cop came to his house in Bagh-e-Mahtab area of uptown Srinagar and handed him the NIA summons today.
“Whereas it appears that you are acquainted with circumstances of the case: RC 10/2017/NIA/DLI,” reads the NIA letter addressed to Naseem-ul-Zaffar Geelani, “you are hereby required to attend (questioning) on 26/12/2017 at 11 am at (NIA) headquarters for the purpose of answering certain questions relating to the case.” The letter is signed by NIA SP Arvind Digvijay Negi.
Naseem said this was the fourth time that he was being questioned by the NIA in the funding case.
After raiding at least 70 places from Srinagar to New Delhi, the NIA on May 30 registered the case RC 10/2017/NIA/DLI in a Delhi police station against Syed Ali Geelani and Lashkar-e-Toiba chief Hafiz Saeed.
Seven Hurriyat Conference leaders, including Altaf Ahmad Shah ‘Fantoosh’, Peer Saifullah, Ayaz Akbar, Raja Mehraj-ud-Din Kalwal, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Shahid-ul-Islam and Farooq Ahmad Dar ‘Bitta Karate’ were arrested in July in the alleged case.
The incarcerated Hurriyat Conference leaders, all of them close to Geelani, are in judicial custody in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since.
The NIA has also arrested top businessman Zahoor Ahmad Watali, a Pulwama-based photojournalist, Kamran Yousuf, and a Kulgam-based farmer, Javed Ahmad, in the alleged case. All are in Tihar Jail under judicial custody.
The anti-terror body has charged the accused under Sections 120B, 121, 121A of IPC, r/w Sections 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 38, 39 and 40 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The NIA has sought extension of at least 90 days in filing its charge sheet in the case. Lawyers in the know of the case said that the NIA has to file it by January 15, 2018.
Naseem said he has been questioned thrice by the NIA in the case while his brother and Geelani’s elder son, Syed Naeem Geelani, has been questioned twice in the past.
Geelani has two sons, both of whom are married and live independently. Naseem is a teacher at SK University of Agricultural Sciences Kashmir while Naeem is a doctor.
