SRINAGAR: Several people who have been promised government jobs in lieu of land acquisition by Public Health and Engineering department held a protest against the government for failing to provide them jobs.
The protesters said that government had promised them jobs instead of compensation at the time of acquisition and was doing “grave injustice” towards them by not fulfilling their promise since 2002.
“PHE department acquired my land in 2002 and had promised to provide government job in return. It has been more than 15 years but I got nothing in return of the land,” Muhammad Akbar, resident of Shall-Naag area of Budgam said.
Akbar said that he visited the concerned legislator Hakim Mohammed Yaseen who “assured” him of resolving the issue. “His word also turned out nothing more than eyewash. We also visited several government offices but nobody resolved solve genuine issue”.
Muhammad Yakoob Ganie, a resident of Shopian said he gave 10 marlas of land to the PHE department.
“The then junior engineer of PHE visited my home and requested me for land and promised me of a job in return. I signed an agreement before executive engineer of Shopian as per court norms,” he said. “If they promised a government job I wonder why government does not fulfill its promise.”
Farooq Ahmad, resident of Sanoor Kalipora area of Budgam said, “Government did not respond to my queries despite making several rounds in the department. If government has no plans to give us jobs I don’t have any option but to ask for return of my land.”
