UNGA Resolution

UNGA Resolution

The United Nations General Assembly has voted against the United States decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This is a very welcome development which among other things suggests that world opinion is against this odious and terrible move of the United States. But, the prosaic reality is that the United States has never really cared for what others think of its omissions and commissions. The Second Gulf War is eloquent testimony of the country’s arrogance and hubris. The United States then chose to obscure its real agenda by going for pre-emptive war of choice against Iraq, disregarding international law in the process. In terms of the country’s relationship and alliance with Israel, the United States has been a staunch friend and ally, disregarding reputational and other costs- especially the country’s standing in the Muslim world. The reason(s) for this support, besides the obvious, is the strong Jewish lobby in the country. This lobby, through campaign finance contributions, and the presence of its members in think tanks, foreign policy establishment, universities and other important institutions ensures that the United States remains a strong ally of Israel, so much so that not even a hint of criticism of Israel’s crimes, is not accepted and countenanced. Then there is the Western media which holds and has a structural bias against the Muslim world, barring a few notable exceptions. All these themes gel together and make the United States unbelievably pro Israel and, by extension, against Palestinians. Now, returning to the UNGA resolution, it is all well and fine but the centre of gravity of the United Nations is the Security Council where the United States fidelity to Israel remains, by the use of the veto. This is not to demean the UNGA but to put matters into perspective. The United States’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is an odious, terrible and bad move. But, the real arena for resisting the United States and this particular move of the country must emanate from the Muslim world. There are many domains that the Muslim world can actually resist and raise the costs for the United States. These include economic, trade and political ones. But, for this happen, the Muslim world has to have spine, which has been missing till now. Moreover, the unity that is need to resist the United States is also sorely missing. But, the Jerusalem decision strikes at the very heart of the Islamic world. If this does not concentrate minds and create a united front, perhaps nothing ever will. It is, therefore about time that Muslims united or, in the least, present a united front, and resist the United States’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, tooth and nail.
