SRINAGAR: Injured while firefighting at Koker Bazar on December 6, fireman Abdul Majid Wani died Saturday evening at the SMHS Hospital in Srinagar. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Majid fell from a three-storey building at Koker-Bazar area of the city center while dousing a fire.
“I heard that his foot had slipped after the fire was put off,” Shabir Ahmad, Majid’s nephew told Kashmir Reader. “He had saved property worth millions of rupees and saved hundreds of lives, by his intelligence and method of conducting operations.”
Majid, according to his relatives was religious as well humorous person and would make people smile within minutes.
He was dedicated and loyal towards his profession, they said. “It seemed as if Majid was born to serve people. He would miss family functions in order to keep himself available for duty,” Shabir said.
Majid was appointed in the fire and emergency department in 1989 and has served across the valley. His son Jan Mohammad said Majid dedicated 80 percent of his life to the department. “Our father gave preference to his work more than us but that did not mean he did not care for us. The time we spend with him he used to tell us one simple thing that to be honest and truthful,” Jan told Kashmir Reader.
