Srinagar: Taking cognizance of media reports of the sacking of a teacher couple on their wedding day, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Friday sought answers from the school management as well as the education department on why this was done.
Tariq Bhat and Sumaya Bashir, who worked in the boys and girls’ wing, respectively, of Muslim Education Institute (MEI) Pampore, were sacked from their jobs by the school management on their wedding day.
The SHRC directed Director Education, Kashmir, and Principal of MEI to report to the commission on Dec 18 to answer why the couple has been terminated from services.
The commission remarked that it was unfortunate to learn that the newlywed couple were terminated from their services on their marriage day. The responsible authorities must clear their position before the commission, it said.
The two had been working at the school for several year. They said that their termination came without any prior notice.
The chairman of MEI, Bashir Masoodi, had told the media that the couple were terminated because they were in a “romantic relationship” before getting married.
Principal MEI Tariq Ahmad Bhat confirmed to Kashmir Reader that he has been called by the SHRC.
Meanwhile, sources told Kashmir Reader that the management of the MEI school has been summoned by Director School Education Kashmir on December 16. The sacked teacher couple has welcomed the SHRC decision.
