Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday endorsed the declaration by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
Mirwaiz told Kashmir Reader that he will be writing to the secretary-general of OIC in the coming days on behalf of the people of Kashmir for taking such a “historic decision”.
“We are happy. The OIC declaration is welcome but now it should be endorsed by other countries,” he said.
The OIC declaration on Jerusalem came days after US President Donald Trump decided to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The move was slammed worldwide and the United Nations condemned the US decision.
“The OIC should now use its diplomatic efforts and win over the European Union (EU) and other UN member states to declare East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine,” Mirwaiz said.
“The occupation of Palestine must end and I will be formally writing to the OIC in a few days,” he said.
Drawing parallels between Palestine and Kashmir, Mirwaiz said, “I will be asking the OIC to take initiative on Kashmir as well, like it has done in the Palestine case.”
“We, the people of J&K, extend our full support to such a decision to declare East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine. But now OIC must move beyond it and initiate diplomatic efforts on Kashmir as well,” he said.
