SRINAGAR: A fire incident heavily damaged electronic equipment and other items in the Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ) as fire broke out at the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) at Nowgam Campus-I on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency like situation was created as students saw smoke coming out of the third floor of the rented building housing the CUK campus.
A CUK official said, “The smoke emanated from the media studio and spread to the other adjoining rooms of the department.”
He said that fire damaged the costly equipment of the media studio. “Despite fire safety measures, the studio suffered extensive damages.”
However, the official said the exact cause of fire is not known and is being ascertained by the police and relevant quarters.
Soon after the fire incident, the media department faculty safely evacuated and rescued the students after being aided by the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Department.
“One of the faculty members of the department of tourism studies and few members from the administrative staff sustained minor injuries in the incident,” he added.
The fire was brought under the control due to the timely intervention of the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Department. The personnel of the SDRF also made efforts to contain the fire and evacuated some of the staff members, he said.
The CUK has lodged a formal FIR in the fire incident and a committee have been also constituted by the university to probe the cause of fire.
Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Kashmir, Prof Mehraj ud Din Mir chaired a meeting and lauded the efforts of some of the staff members for carrying out the evacuation.
Prof Mir also thanked the divisional administration and the J&K police for their help in maintaining the law and order during the incident
“All the End Semester Examination (ESE) of university will be conducted from 15th December 2017 would be held on time,” said Mehraj ud din.
