Women’s civil rights trampled by their own families: Justice Kirmani

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir State Accountability Commission (SCA) Member and former Justice Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice (Retd), Bashir A Kirmani on Sunday said that women face maximum number of rights violation in their homes only.
“In majority of the cases, especially in property rights, the women’s civil rights are being trampled by their brothers, husbands and their in-laws, particularly their mother-in-laws,” Justice (Retd), Bashir A Kirmani said while delivering a special lecture on ‘Civil Rights of Women’ jointly organised by the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and Women Empowerment Cell (WEC) of the Central University of Kashmir (CUK).
He said the mother-in-laws are also responsible for the miserable plight of women as there have been many incidents where they have been identified as the main culprits in perpetuating the violence.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir, Chairperson ICC and WEC, Prof. Nighat Basu, Dean School of Business Studies, Prof. S Fayyaz, Dean School of Legal Studies, Dr. Sheikh Showkat, Head Department of Religious Studies, Prof. Hamid Naseem Rafiabadi, Head Department of Management Studies, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Dean Directorate of Students Welfare, Dr. Fayyaz A Nikka, Heads and Coordinators of other departments, faculty members, scholars and students were also present during the lecture.
Justice Kirmani said that more important is to see how and where the rights of women are being violated rather than listing the rights of women.
Deliberating on the rights of women in Religious and Constitutional perspective, he said that many a times, the rights in these categories clash with each other. He also deliberated on the topic of Triple Talaq and its implications on the womenfolk in the context of Islam.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir while addressing the participants underscored the need to respect and protect the civil rights of women. “Women have been on receiving end from the times immemorial and heinous crimes including rapes, dowry deaths, harassments and domestic violence are committed against her. There have been several instances wherein the foetus of baby girls are aborted,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din said and asked the civil society to rise up to the occasion and start a movement to stop such injustices and crimes against the women.
