Brief exchange of fire at night followed by clashes in morning
SHOPIAN: Clashes broke out between government forces and local youth in Shopian’s Barthipora village on Sunday after troops launched a cordon and search operation there.
Villagers pelted the government forces with stones and the forces retaliated with tear smoke shelling. Locals said that there was a late-night firing incident and the forces cordoned off the village in the morning and carried out house-to-house searches that continued till 2pm on Sunday.
The late-night firing continued for at least 15 minutes, creating panic among the residents.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shopian SA Dinkar told Kashmir Reader that searches were carried out in the area today morning. However, nothing was found there, he said.
“Last night, an ambush was laid by the army after inputs of militants’ movement. A brief exchange of fire between militants and army soldiers occurred. However, the militants took advantage of darkness and succeeded in fleeing from the area,” he said.
According to him, minor clashes erupted during the search operation but the situation was under control with no injuries or casualties.
Meanwhile, government forces carried out a cordon and search operation in Khuserpora village of Hajin in Bandipora on Sunday. An official said that acting on a tip-off about presence of militants in the area, the army and the SOG together launched a search operation in the village. However, the operation had to be called off as no contact was established with militants, he said.
