BUDGAM: The shrine of Nowroz Baba in Khag area of Budgam district was gutted in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
Local residents said this was the second time in a decade, that a mysterious fire engulfed the shine.
President Intizamia Committee Mushtaq Ahmad Dar told Kashmir Reader that at around 12:15 am they spotted bright light coming out of the windows of the shrine.
“When our family came out we saw the fire had engulfed the shrine from all sides,” Mushtaq said.
“We rushed to the spot but the fire was beyond control. Finally I made an announcement from the loudspeaker of a local mosque,” he said.
He said residents rushed to spot but the fire was intense. They called the fire brigade which had to travel some 30 kilometers to reach the spot.
“It took them (fire brigade) almost two hours to be here. By the time it was completely gutted,” Mushtaq said adding the village is devoid of basic facilities “like roads and water”.
He said the shrine had last gutted in 2009, after which the villagers raised money for reconstruction.
“It took almost 20 lakh rupees to reconstruct it,” Mushtaq said.
Local residents urged the government to install fire extinguishers in all the shrines.
This is the fourth incident of fire in Khag tehsil of Budgam in last 15 days.
The Khag area comprising of around 80 villages have no fire and emergency services facility despite requests to government from residents.
