Two arrested from SMHS hospital, others absconding
Srinagar: Police on Wednesday arrested two touts from Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital for allegedly cheating ailing people by offering them discount in surgeries and diagnostic tests at private health institutions in exchange for money.
Official sources told Kashmir Reader that the accused duo had been running the illegal business in SMHS hospital for many years luring patients to private health institutions and diagnostic centres.
“We have registered a case of fraud against them and started the investigation. The case was registered after receiving complaints from SMHS Hospital authorities,” said a police official wishing anonymity.
According to doctors, the hospital authorities have registered complaint against more people who are running similar business in the SMHS Hospital. However, they are absconding following the arrest of two touts.
“The attendants accompanying patients have to face lot of inconvenience at the hands of these touts who are often after gullible patients to lure them to private clinics and diagnostic centres,” they said.
“Most of these touts are the paid agents of the diagnostic labs and private healthcare institutions which are running in the close vicinity of SMHS hospital. They usually lure patients and attendants to undergo tests or surgeries at their hospital or get different examination done from particular centres,” said a senior doctor.
He said the illegal business has become a nuisance for the people coming to the hospital from far flung areas.
Medical Superintendent, SMHS Hospital, Dr Saleem Tak said the touts have been arrested after they found them roaming unauthorizedly in the Hospital OPD operating their illegal business of luring people to private institutions.
“We have been keeping watch on them and finally caught them and handed them over to police,” he said.
Dr Tak said there were more such people roaming in the hospital who are working for private institutions especially the diagnostic labs.
