SRINAGAR: To commemorate the foundation day of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), the 35th annual day was celebrated on Tuesday. Finance minister Haseeb Drabu was the chief guest on the occasion and minister of state for health & medical education Asiea Naqash was the guest of honour while as former director and dean and member, governing body, SKIMS Prof. M.S. Khuroo was the special guest.
An official statement issued here said the function started with the Sher-i-Kashmir Memorial Oration which was delivered by Prof. M.S. Khuroo, an internationally renowned gastroenterologist. He spoke on the importance of biomedical research and its relevance in the present day scenario. He also emphasised that lack of high-tech infrastructure should not deter a scientist from carrying the need based medical research.
Drabu recognised the SKIMS as “one of the most successful and leading institutions” in the state which has a history of having delivered “world class services during times of difficulties and adversities”. He emphasised for the greater financial and administrative autonomy for SKIMS and other such institutions of learning, the statement said. He suggested the need of compiling a treatise depicting the historical growth of SKIMS in the last three and a half decades. He later on released the 35th annual report of SKIMS.
Asiea Naqash lauded the efforts of faculty and the institute staff for their “tremendous contribution towards the better patient care”. She requested the finance minister to lend all possible financial support for the upliftment of SKIMS.
Prof. A.G. Ahangar, Director SKIMS & Ex-Officio Secretary to government shed light on the achievements made by SKIMS during the year 2016-17 on various fronts towards up-gradation and establishment of various patient care facilities such as PET CT Scan, New Digital Cardiac Cath Lab, State-of-the-Art Equipment, High Energy Linear Accelerator, Digital Subtraction Angiography Lab, 100 bedded Maternity Hospital, Five Additional Emergency Theatres, Extension of Accident & Emergency (Phase I, II & III) and Extension of OPD Block and 120 bedded State Cancer Institute.
He thanked the finance minister for full financial and other logistic support to SKIMS and towards establishing a State Level Medical University and further understanding and contribution to the Dream Project of Cashless Care at SKIMS and State Health Insurance for one and all that was debated in 43rd meeting of the governing body of SKIMS held on 26 October, 2016.
Dean, Faculty of Medicine, SKIMS presented his report on the academic achievements and activities during the year 2016-17. He gave the brief profile about the degrees granted by the SKIMS Deemed University.
Prof. Riyaz Untoo, Principal SKIMS Medical College, Bemina highly appreciated the efforts of the Director, SKIMS & Ex-Officio Secretary to Government for his support on various fronts particularly in upgrading the infrastructure and manpower at SKIMS, Medical College, Bemina.
Prof. M. Afzal Wani, former HOD Neurosurgery, Dean, SKIMS & Principal, SKIMS Medical College was awarded the lifetime achievement award for his remarkable contribution towards establishing and nurturing the Department of Neurosurgery at SKIMS.
On the occasion, the employees belonging to various cadres were honoured with awards for their achievements in academics, research and other fields. Overall, the celebrations concluded on a happy note encouraging the scholars to establish further milestones in the journey of success to make the SKIMS as the centre of excellence, the statement said. The efforts of organizing chairman, Prof. Tariq A Gojwari, and organizing secretary, Prof. Irfan Robbani were applauded for making the event a grant success.
