SRINAGAR: Police on Saturday used tear smoke shells and baton charge to clear Srinagar-Jammu highway, at Vessu in Qazigund area of Kulgam district, blocked by protesting locals for more than an hour. The locals, as per reports, were protesting a defunct transformer in their area.
As per reports, the residents of Ganaipora and Hanjipora villages in Vessu area blocked the highway near Vessu, at about 11:00 AM. “Our transformer developed a snag a month back and since it has not been repaired, despite repeated reminders to the authorities,” the people alleged.
They said that they were left with no other choice but to block the highway.
The traffic kept swelling on the highway as the road remained blocked for more than an hour, following which police used tear smoke shells and baton charge to disperse them.
