SRINAGAR: An illegal sweet manufacturing unit was sealed in Safa Kadal locality of old Srinagar on Thursday for preparing fake and unhygienic sweets under a reputed brand name.
According to officials, a non-local trader from Uttar Pradesh, Muhammad Danish Siddiq was operating illegal sweet manufacturing unit in Dana Mazar area of Safa Kadal for many years.
Danish has been distributing a famous sweet chikkis illegally under fake labels in the name of a reputed Delhi-based sweets manufacturing company.
“On the basis of a tipoff our team raided a manufacturing unit in Safa Kadal today. We were shocked to find that groundnut chikkies and other confectionary items are being manufactured on which the address of Manies Sweets and Namkeens Okhla Vihar New Delhi was inscribed,” Assistant Commissioner Food Safety in Srinagar, Hilal Ahmad Mir told Kashmir Reader.
“The unit was operating in Safakadal and uses the fake labels on which the address of Manies Sweets and Namkeens Okhla Vihar New Delhi was inscribed,” he said.
“The unit was also closed as he doesn’t have the license under Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. We have also lifted the samples of the sweets for lab testing. The entire stock of 8500 packets of groundnut chikki and fake labels were also seized in huge quantity,” the officer said.
Mir said the large-scale manufacturing of sweets was going on illegally at the unit and products had been made in total unhygienic condition putting its consumers at risk.
“The manufacturing place was choked with filth making the visitors feel like vomiting with disgust,” he said.
According to officials, the personal hygiene of workers was questionable, as they were least bothered about their own personal cleanliness or that of their environs.
“No product or container was covered and the sweets were stored in dirty containers. The ingredients were kept in rusted containers which are a serious health hazard,” he said.
