Shopian: An initiative started by a group of sensitive citizens on environmental issues has taken up the onerous task of cleaning the waste and dirt filled water bodies, markets, parks, springs and residential areas.
Christened as ‘Save environment, Save Kashmir’, the campaign started from November 8 recently restored several springs in the valley and cleaned garbage near water bodies like Jehlum and springs in main town Budgam, Ladoo village of Pulwama, Uri, Bejbehara and Pampore. The group says that their intervention encouraged the authorities to take up several cleanliness works.
“We don’t want to keep the record of the works done by us but our priority is to save the environment. We have no agenda other than saving environment and we do it with our hands,” a group member said. They said that when authorities have failed in addressing environmental issues, it was their duty to do it.
Another group member said that they will not stop the drive until most of the environmental issues were solved. “This is not a drive but an awareness programme. We encourage people to decompose the waste and stay away from the use of polythene,” he said.
“The government must stop the entry of polythene in the valley and strict laws should be framed to ban the sale of polythene,” a member of the group told Kashmir Reader.
He said polythene was the worst thing which has polluted the environment. “We are seeing huge heaps of polythene everywhere and it has severe health hazards and environmental implications,” he said.
